Lets get real about Holistic Living
First and foremost - there is no right or wrong way to do this. It doesn't have to be all or nothing and you can most definitely pick and choose what works for your family and what doesn't.
When I began my journey of wanting to be more mindful, healthy, eco-friendly and connected to the world around me, it was called being "crunchy". That was back in 2014 when I was pregnant with our first son. It was overwhelming and there was this all or nothing attitude attached to being "crunchy".
You HAD to swap every single cleaner you owned out to eco-friendly chemical-free ones. You HAD to buy only organic fruits & veg, and you HAD to only dress your tiny babies in the finest of undyed 1000% sustainable linen (and you had to sew it yourself). You most likely were labeled as a crazy Hippie as well.
It was exhausting and unattainable.
At this point, this simple but connected lifestyle had been hijacked by Instagram and Pinterests unachievable standards for the average woman or family, making it seem out of reach for many.
Holistic Living is so much more than aesthetically pleasing pictures on social media and it is not and never will be black and white.
Holistic means whole.
Holisitic Living means nourishing and living in harmony with your mind, body, soul, spirit and surroundings. It means finding balance and interconnection between all aspects of life. It means being mindfull of your footprint here, and living intentionally.
I'm not going to lie though. It's not easy. It's downright hard. And it takes time and conscious & consistent effort.
But, it is not a A to B scenario. You don't need to swap out every single chemical laden product spending thousands of dollars to do so. You don't have to only buy organic and from the Clean 15 list. And you really don't have to make any changes overnight.
It's called a Holistic Lifestyle. Which means it is an ongoing and fluid thing. There was a movement on Instagram before I took my extended social media leave showing that you don't have to go all in. You can do this lifestyle half assed. One product at a time, one lesson at a time, one article at a time and so on.
It's a journey. To interconnect our lives and create balance takes time. And to be honest, once you get one thing in your life in order another will need tending. It's an ongoing process. It's back and forth and it's messy.
The most important thing you can do is just start. Start and don't stop. No matter how many times it feels like you're doing it wrong or that all your efforts are futile. Keep going.
There are tons of articles going deep into detail about this topic but I will leave you today with a simple list of ways you can begin living a more Holistic Lifestyle (in no specific order).
- Listen to your body. Feed it good quality food. Look for seasonal fruits and veg for your area. Better yet - connect with local farmers/growers for these items. Local meat just hits different I tell ya.
- Prioritize yourself - make movement an absolute 💯. Even a simple walk is a great start.
- Make smart swaps for product in your home. Do not do this all at once. When an bottle/item is empty - research a better product. Better for you/your family, better for the environment. Less packaging. All Natural doesn't always mean best. Look at the ingredients. Learn to recognize the unsafe ones.
- Grow something. Whether that be a 4x4 garden or bigger. Veggie pots on your deck or some herbs in the window. At least buy a few house plants and practice that green thumb. There is a connection you get from growing something. It is absolutely incredible and I'll expand on this feeling in another article.
- Journal. Just write. About anything and everything or nothing at all. Doodle. Jot. Make lists. Something to clear the clutter in your mind.
- What does your spiritual practice look like? Are you on a journey. Do you have a relationship with a God/Goddess. Is your religion nature? Do you feel connected to the universe. Do you read Tarot? Whatever your practice looks like, keep it going. Keep learning and growing. Keep the lines to source clear & open.
- Connect with other like-minded souls. Reach out to people who are already living in a way you think would mesh with your life/family. Ask questions and be proactive. This lifestyle doesn't happen overnight and it helps to have others along on the journey.
This list clearly isn't the be all end all. Pick 1 thing and work on it. It's a process and we need to learn to trust it. Don't give up if your journey looks different from the next persons.
The only thing that matters is that you consciously make an effort everyday to live in a more holistic mindset. Be authentic with yourself and your goals.
