May and June Around the Homestead

May and June Around the Homestead
Cornish Cross Meat Chicks

I'm not really sure where May went... but here we are a week into June already. Oyyyyy!

May was a lot. We got our chicks and ducklings and had to basically start & finish up the chicken tractors. I started transplanting my cabbage and brussels sprout seedlings and direct seeded peas, radishes, lettuce and beets.

Meat Chicks, Hen Chicks, Muscovy Ducklings

We ordered 2 muscovy ducklings but unfortunately they died the next day. I'm not 100% sure why... but from some research done after the fact I think it might have been from the feed. (ducklings can choke on the powder of ground feeds - be sure if you can't find duck feed that you are feeding a chick starter that is in crumb form not mash) I ended up ordering 6 more ducklings and found an actual Goose and Duck Starter Feed. They are growing like weeds now!!

In dire need of some TLC

The Garden is where I have been spending 80% of my time and for now it is all planted but needs a little TLC to clean it up, weed and add mulch where needed....With rain in the forecast for a few days that will have to wait while I tend to the neglected inside of the house!! 🤣 Hello laundry, dishes and dog hair!!

I will be doing a separate post on the building of the chicken tractors and I am hoping to start a Herb series as I deep study 12 herbs over the next 12 months! Stay tuned!!

For the amount of time spent on life in the last two months this post is short and sweet but I am honestly just really exhausted. The upcoming rainy weather is very much welcomed for my plants and my sanity!!!

Shelby on guard duty!!

Below is some Bug Spray I made for all those pesky mosquitoes this year! Man are they bad or are they bad???? Ugh!!

Natural Bug Spray

Some great essential oils to keep away bugs that bite are Lemongrass, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Peppermint, Vetiver, Geranium, Lemon Eucalyptus, and Citronella. Mix 45 drops of your choice of oils with a tablespoon of carrier oil (eg. Fractioned Coconut Oil, Almond Oil) or vegetable glycerin, add to a 4oz bottle, fill halfway with witch hazel and top with water. Shake well before each use!! For Babies under 3 - use an equal mix of Lemongrass Hydrosol, Peppermint Hydrosol and Geranium Hydrosol.
