Where to buy seeds and herbs online in Canada

Chances are if you're reading this, in January and you live in Canada… you are cold, tired of the snow, freezing temperatures and longing for something green in your life.

There truly is something magical about flipping through a seed catalogue with a coffee in hand, inside, wrapped in a blanket dreaming of the growing season ahead. Now I am all for supporting local shops, nurseries, and growers when the time comes in the spring to get plant starts and direct seed seeds, however, some seeds need to be started early and a lot of nurseries are not open during the winter months. Many herbs if not all (aside from your typical culinary herbs) are also hard to find in remote locations.

This is where seed catalogues and online ordering comes into the picture. There are many places to get seeds across the United States online and I have ordered from them in the past (with hefty exchange, shipping and duty fees ugh!)

Here in Canada there are 3 main companies I consistently order from. From herbs to veggies to hard to find varieties, they have provided quality seeds and plants for my homestead year after year.

1. West Coast Seeds - British Columbia - I first found West Coast Seeds at my local Co-op. I was excited to see the beautiful store display complete with sprouting jar kits and lots of new seeds to try. When they were out of the brussels sprout seeds I wanted, I hit the internet to see if I could order online. I had hit the seed lovers jackpot. 2. Richters Herbs Ontario - My oldest garden companion. The first seed catalogue I ever received and my first stop for online orders of potted herbs and veggies. Shipping is very reasonable and while the ordering process can be a tad confusing, I promise in the end it is definitely worth it. The quality of the live plants and seeds are great. 3. The Incredible Seed Company - Nova Scotia - This is where I usually find specialty seeds. I originally found their website while looking for Luffa Gourd seeds to grow in my zone. I have since bought everything from tomato to acorn squash seeds from them and they have become a reliable source for seeds. While they don't mail out a free paper catalogue like the previous two.
